Broken Pulpits and other Broken Things

Until Sunday, I could honestly say that I had never seen a pastor shatter a pulpit while preaching.  But, today I can't say that.  Brother Danny ruined my "no pastor breaking a pulpit string" by slamming his pulpit to the ground in a moment of excitement demolishing his fiberglass pulpit.  Honestly the pulpit seemed to fall in slow motion like a huge redwood that had just be cut down.  His notes and Bible scattered everywhere.  The look on his face was priceless.  While he was a good sport, made a couple of quick jokes, and we all got a good laugh it reminded me of some serious Bible lessons about broken things.

There are lots of stories in the Bible of God using broken things.  In the Old Testament God used broken pitchers in Judges 7:18-19.  In Mark 14:3, God used a broken alabaster box and a fragrance anointed Jesus.  In Matthew 14:10, bread was broken to feed the hungry.  This morning in my quiet time I read Psalm 51:17, which reminds us that God desires us to have a broken and contrite heart.  God uses broken things.  His desire is for us to remain broken and pliable.  In 1 Corinthians 11, Jesus reminded the disciples that His body was broken for us.  The Savior of the world allowed Himself to be broken that we can have eternal life.  Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Good sermon on brokenness; you can use timber as an intro to lighten things up (:
