A Disciple of Jesus Christ

Well, it sure has been a while since my last post.  Sorry!

For the past few weeks I've been studying what it really means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.  I've read and am reading books on the topic. (The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Radical by David Platt,  Crazy Love by Francis Chan) Mostly, however, I'm searching the Word of God.  Jesus said some strange things about being a true disciple.  Here's a couple of them:  "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me (Luke 9:23,NASB); If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple (Luke 14:26, NASB).  If we believe the Bible is true and without error (and we do), then we must believe what Jesus said is right.  Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ is more than church attendance.  It's complete surrender. Bonhoeffer said, "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die."  Are we willing to pay the price for becoming a disciple or are we good with casual Christianity?  A frightening question indeed?

Dawson Trotman said of discipleship, "It really wasn't till about 1940, even though I had been saved since 1926, that I realized that whatever I did, that's what my men would do regardless of how much talking I did. I began to see that the people that i was working with must lead their men and women to the Lord and then follow them up and get them in the Word like I was getting them into the Word. Like begets like!" (The Navigator, pg 116-117)
