Jesus Understands

Jesus Understands

October 01, 2020

One of the greatest ways that we can connect with others is showing empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It builds a connection between you and the other person because you understand their pain or suffering or just the dilemma they are in. Truthfully, it can be difficult to connect if you haven’t gone through what they are experiencing. Thankfully, Jesus never has this issue.  Jesus understands.

Hebrews 4:14-16. [14] Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold fast our confession. [15] For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been temped as we are, yet without sin.  [16] Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

We know that according to the Scriptures, Jesus who knew no sin became sin so that we might be right with God (2 Corinthians 5:21). We know Jesus took all our sin upon himself when He died, conquering sin and death when he rose from the grave. However, have you ever thought about what Jesus endured because of sin? Think about it. When you or I sin there’s always a consequence whether outward or inward. Pain, suffering, betrayal, humiliation, degradation of character, loss of relationship, hatred among others, etc.

At one time or another we have all experienced these feelings or actions because of our sin, but did you know that Jesus experienced all of this in a 24 hour period. From the moment he was betrayed by Judas in the garden to when he hung on the cross with his final breath saying “It is finished”, Jesus experienced every consequence that sin brings in our lives. There is no pain, hurt, betrayal, or loss that you’ve gone through in life that Jesus has not experienced. Jesus went through everything we would ever go through so that not only He could save us from our sins, but also connect with us more intimately than we ever thought one could. So when we experience the troubles and trials of this life, we know we have a loving Savior who understands and wants us to draw close to Him to receive mercy and find grace in our time of need.

What are you experiencing right now that you feel no one else understands? Remember that Jesus willingly went through the same experience so that he can be close to you because he loves you and desires an intimate relationship with you.

Lord Jesus, thank you that you were without sin and you have removed my sin and its consequences.  In my weakness, thank you that you give strength.  -Amen
