Nothing but Love

Nothing but Love

What comes to mind when you think of the word “Love”?
This word has several different meanings in the English language.  Did you know the Bible mentions the word “Love" over 310 times?  It’s a word that Jesus mentions often in his teachings.  In Paul’s letter to the church of Corinth, he reminds the people that Love is needed if we are to show people Jesus living in us.

1 Corinthians 13: 1-3
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

In chapter 12 of 1 Corinthians, Paul is sharing about diversity within the body of Christ.  God has made and gifted each of us in different ways.  What a blessing it is that we aren’t all the same!  With this list of different parts of one body (the church) Paul says the driver behind it all is love.  The reason why we do things or don’t do things is born out of that love we have in Jesus.

When tough words are spoken in love they are easier to receive.  When words of wisdom are given, they go to greater depths if they come from a place of love.  As christians, we have a responsibility to show this world who Jesus is and that is accomplished through our interactions with one another.  Do people see your love for God and each other in your social media posts?  Does the world see your relationship with Jesus in the way you treat the staff in a restaurant?

We can have all of the greatest gifts in the world but if we lack love, then we have missed it.  It was through God’s love for us that he sent His son Jesus to take our place on the cross.  It was because of that same love that He gives us mercy and grace every single day.  This is the same love that we are called to give to others.

Father, show me how to love you better.
Show me how to love others better.
May I never be a clanging cymbal in how I interact with others.
May people see the love of Christ in me.  In Jesus name, Amen.
