Use Your Freedom

Use Your Freedom

September 14, 2020

Freedom is a word that is used so often that we can easily lose sight of it’s value and the responsibility that comes with it.  We have all heard that nothing is free.  Soldiers have paid the price for our freedoms as a country.  Jesus paid the price for our eternal freedom.  While we may not have paid the price for the freedom, we are responsible for how we use that freedom.

Galatians 5:13-15
[13] For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. [14] For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” [15] But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. (ESV)

In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he wanted them to see that the freedom they had been given from the law came with a choice.  How should they choose to use their freedom?  How should we choose to use our freedom?

One option is to use the freedom for our flesh, or as verse 15 puts it to “bite and devour one another.”  The consequences are clear, we will be consumed by one another.  Maybe we use our freedom to gossip or slander someone.  Maybe we use this freedom to cheat or shortcut our way on the ladder of success.  Some fleshly uses of this freedom may even seem to benefit us in the short term, but this is not true freedom!

The other option is to use this freedom to serve one another through love.  It seems odd that we would use our freedom to serve, but this was Christ’s example too (Mark 10:45).  And if God is love (1 John 4:8), then we are to serve one another through God.  Chew on that for a minute!

How can you serve others? How can you serve others through love?  How can you serve others through God’s love?  Chances are that someone or something has already crossed your mind.  Don’t wait. Use your freedom to serve one another in love!

God, thank you for my freedom!  Open my eyes today to see others the way You see them. Help me to love them with Your love.
Thank you for loving me.  In Jesus name- Amen.
