The Good Kid

The Good Kid

September 08, 2020

I was always considered the “good” kid. I made good grades, did good in sports, was a good student/friend/son. Most parents would say to their kids, “Why couldn’t you be more like Tyler?” (which I hated…please don’t do this with your kid’s friends). Over time, I developed a false belief that my “good” behavior would be enough to please God and enter heaven. Boy was I wrong!

Hosea 6:6. For I desire steadfast love1 and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

This verse speaks to what God desires for all people. Many folks have done good Christian acts for the wrong reasons. We tend to even teach our kids the same things. We desire for them to have good behavior without pointing them to heart transformation which needs to take place as well.

Much like Saul in 1Samuel. Saul won a great battle and was given very specific instructions of what he was to do with the spoils of war. Sadly, Saul disobeyed and took livestock and captives as his spoils from the battle. He then sacrificed some to God seeking to please Him, which prompted the prophet Samuel to say, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.” - 1 Samuel 15:22

Like Saul, we can do things that we think are pleasing to God but still disobey Him.  We have to understand that the proof of our loving is faithful obedience. That’s why Jesus said “If you love me you will keep My commandments.” - John 14:15

This is my heart for kid's ministry. I want kids to know and fall in love with Jesus. The more they know the person/character of God and the life/death/resurrection of Jesus, the more they will love Him. And the more they love Him, the more they will obey Him.
We want hearts transformed, not merely our behavior modified.
So let me ask you “Why do you obey the Lord?“

Dear Jesus, help me to know you more. Open my heart to see you in your Word and the world around me. May the more I understand the love and sacrifice of the cross and lead me into a deeper love for you. I want all that I do to come from a transformed heart that is overflowing with love for you. In Jesus Name, AMEN.
