Counter Current

Counter Current

September 23, 2020

Growing up in Florida the summers were really hot and humid so we found our way to the pool.  One of our favorite activities was to get everyone moving around the pool in a circular motion which would create a current in the water.  We would move faster and faster so that we could then change directions and swim against the current.  It was a lot of fun but very tiring.  Paul references this same idea of going against the current/culture in book of Romans.

Romans 12:1-2
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,
to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,
holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed
by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern
what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

When Paul states that we are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice it means to follow the will of the Father with everything we’ve got.  He continues this line of thought by commanding us to not conform to this world, but be transformed.  Our world is full of people only seeking to live for self and only to see the truth if it fits into their way of thinking.

We are called to be in this world but not of it.  This means that we follow Jesus even when it’s counter cultural.  Jesus calls us to look more like Him and less like ourselves.  When we live our lives in such a way the Bible tells us, we automatically look less like the culture.  This is a good thing though.  It means we will stand out and easily recognized for being different.  People will see a difference in us in how we conduct ourselves in any situation.  This difference is Jesus dwelling within.  People will come to know Him through the way we show His love to others.

Father, I pray that today will be the day that I will not worry about “fitting in”.  I pray that today will be the start of me living for you in all circumstances.  To go against the current so that people may see You living through me.  In Jesus name, Amen.
