There are seasons of life we sometimes go through that cause our minds to question God. “Is He even aware of what I’m going through right now?” “How am I going to be able to provide for my family since I’ve been laid off from my job?” Two of my favorite passages of Scripture are found in the book of Matthew, where we are reminded that our heavenly Father knows all things, and that He promises to take care of his own.
Matthew 6:26. “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
Matthew 10:29-31- “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?
And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. (ESV)
The typical house sparrow is a mere 16 centimeters in length, and weighs just 1.1 ounces. The small size of this particular bird helps to make the meaning of the above passages of Scripture quite clear. Just as there is no living thing that is too small for His attention, verse 31 goes a step further by saying that you are much more valuable than many sparrows combined.
When it comes down to the most basic need, it’s interesting to note how Matthew 6:26 highlights the fact that birds do not have to be involved with the planting and harvesting of crops in order to eat. Most birds enjoy a diet of seeds, grains, insects, and in more urban areas, discarded food — things that are always in abundant supply. As our Jehovah-Jireh, God has plenty of whatever it is that you need! We do not need to spend our time worrying about what might or might not happen in the future. God is aware of your individual circumstances, and has an endless supply of resources with which to care for you.
The average human head contains between 100,000 and 150,000 individual hairs. Multiply that by the population of the world (around 7.5 billion), and you get between 750,000,000,000,000 and 1,125,000,000,000,000 individual hairs [I don’t even know how to say those numbers!]. According to Matthew 10:30, God knows the specific number of each and every hair! This again testifies to the omniscience of God, and his ability to be aware of all things, all of the time. Rest assured, whatever is of concern to you today, our great God knows what it is, and is waiting for you to hand it over to Him. Ask God to transform your fears into faith, and your worry into worship — then get ready for the power of God to do a great work in your life!
Lord, as I reflect on these passages of Scripture, I’m reminded that I can trust You at all times. You know everything that’s going on in my life today. My every need — even my smallest concern — is important to You. You have endless resources at Your disposal to use to meet any need I will ever have.
As I seek to trust You more, I give all of my worries and fears to You.
In Jesus’ name I pray — Amen.
